Understanding a Zen koan: insight & meaning


In Zen, a koan is a statement that cannot be understood by reason alone.

Understanding a koan doesn't mean that you come up with a lot of words about it. You have to go beyond logical thinking. You let your whole mind-body-spirit resonate with the koan.

This gives you insights, which may or may not be easy to articulate into words. But whatever words you come up with, they will be rich in meaning for you. Because these words have a direct connection to what is truly meaningful to you: the experience itself.


You can think of a dream as a koan. A dream can be an incredibly powerful springboard into a whole new dimension of meanings. Exploring the dream, and what it means to you, can lead you to deep insights. See video showing what it's like to creatively explore your dreams:
