All too often, men's socialization results in a silencing of the
self. From a very early age, little boys are trained to lose contact
with their inner selves, in order to live up to idealized images
of what it's like to be a man.
A man's task is to reclaim these blurred parts of himself, in order
to be whole.
Joseph Campbell addresses this as the Hero's Journey: how
the various myths describe the process through which one can reclaim
one's sense of self.
Our challenge is not just to deal with the practical obstacles we meet
in life... It is also to allow ourselves to experience life as a hero's
journey.
