self awareness & buddhism beliefs |
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it or who has said it, not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.--Buddha It's human: when we have a problem, we look for a quick fix. We look for the magic pill, the miracle drug, that will solve all our ills... the truth that will set us free... inspirational, motivational quotes that will set us on the right course... Reality is usually more complicated. Life has many facets, and no single explanation can account for all of them. This doesn't mean that we have to disregard all theories, that we have to stop looking for explanations. Just that we're better off with a healthy dose of skepticism. Psychological theories, like all scientific theories, are just "working hypotheses". A theory is not reality, it is a simplified representation of reality - an "as if". If somebody shares with us their "truth", we can try it on for size - see what it does for us. If it doesn't work for us, well, it doesn't. If it works, it still doesn't mean we have to accept it as an exclusive truth. We can still be open to what others have to say. Of course, these caveats also apply to the contents of this site. |
