Avalokiteshvara on the Shore follows the structure of the Heart Sutra very, very loosely, in order to convey a personal interpretation of it.
The Heart Sutra is a classic of Mahayana Buddhism. It deals with "emptiness".
The phrase "Form is emptiness; emptiness is form" is a central insight of Buddhist philosophy. It was first expressed in the Heart Sutra, which is part of the Maha Prajna Paramita collection of scrolls.
