18.8 million American adults suffer from clinical depression. That is
9.5% of the adult population
2003 National Comorbidity Study, sponsored by the National Institutes
of Health:
- 35 million Americans (more than 16% of the population) suffer from
depression severe enough to warrant treatment at some time in their
lives.
- In one given period, 13 to 14 million people experience the illness.
19.1 million Americans 18 to 54 years-old suffer from anxiety disorders.

Many of the people who suffer from depression also suffer from anxiety
(and vice versa).
