We all know that drinking too much, taking drugs, binge eating...
are self-destructive behaviors.
But some behaviors can be self-defeating without being so dramatically
obvious. For instance, going to the mall when you need to save money...
Or hanging out with friends who are a bad influence...
The drama of the self destructive personality feeds on itself: After
you compulsively act
out
a self-defeating
behavior,
you feel so guilty that you drave yourself crazy with shame.
Instead of helping, this often creates a vicious cycle, where you
end up
alleviating the pain of feeling so much shame by acting out... and
creating more guilt and shame... and so on...
You probably know that already: "I know it, but I can’t
help it". Well... counseling can help you find the inner
resources to break free from this cycle of self-sabotage.
