Proactive Psychodynamics: Another way to approach psychoanalysis |
|
In the popular mind, the word "psychoanalysis" summons an old cliche: A patient lying on the couch, an analyst who is barely speaking and keeps taking notes, and a glacial pace of progress despite a frequency of at least 4 sessions a week! In other words, something quaint and ineffective. This is not what I do. To differentiate what I do from the cliche, think of it as "proactive psychodynamics". Psychoanalysis need not be a way to escape reality, or to hide in the past. In fact, when psychanalysis started, it was revolutionary and disturbing. It still has the potential to be disturbing -- in good way, in the sense that it can give you a gut-level understanding that leads you to change. I believe that what's essential in psychoanalysis is not the form - - the couch... the type of interaction... the daily sessions... What is essential is observing dynamic unconscious mental processes, and using these insights to profoundly alter how we see ourselves and what we do. With modern creative tools, a psychodynamic approach still has the immediacy of revealing to us those things that are hidden in plain sight... and the capacity to profoundly transform our lives once we face them.
