Patti D., Kassandra's aunt, Sandy's ex-sister-in-law, started
Equal Parents Week. She writes:
"This is a picture of the person that is the reason why
I do what I do. She is my niece, my little shining light.
Her name is Kassandra. She was named for her father Sandy and
born on Father's Day 1990. She is now 8 1/2 years old. This picture
was taken when she was about 1 1/2 years old. Sandy was putting
together her first tricycle and enjoying every minute of it. She
loved her daddy very much (and the tricycle, too!) and he adored
her. Sandy experienced severe problems with visitation and child
support. He has left California and has not seen Kassandra in
over two years. He currently owes thousands of dollars of arrears
in child support as a result of having been laid off, losing jobs
and being ordered to pay support in amounts he could never afford
in the first place. He has literally given up hope of being a
parent and ever putting his life back together as a result of
the large child support arrears. But in his heart he cherishes
Kassandra and will never stop loving her. This picture shows in
a way no words could convey what is really most important to him,
what he really wants to be doing with his life, and where he really
wants to be: in his daughter's life and being a father. The family
law system that considers him a deadbeat has instead has beaten
a loving and responsible father dead and forced him out of the
life of his daughter.
Please include their picture in your beautiflil quilt.
P.S. I chose purple as the color for the Equal Parents' Week
ribbons in Kassandra's honor. It is her favorite color."
